Harford Courant sports columnist, Bill Lee said it best. There was no reason for Amherst to play Wesleyan nor for Dartmouth to come all the way down from Hanover to play Yale. Only one game mattered that Saturday: Coast Guard vs. Trinity.

Both teams came in undefeated, and 6,000 fans crowded around Trinity Feld to watch the historic matchup.

Coast Guard took a late lead, 13-7, with just three minutes remaining in the game, but led by Joe Beidler’s “aerial bombs,” the Bantams marched down to the Coast Guard five-yard line.

Once, twice, three times the Cadets held, but with just 2 second remaining, Chuck Foster, Trinity’s “mercury footed wingback,” raced around end for a touchdown as time expired.

Finally, it all came down to Bantam kicker Jerry Boucher… ”With police barely successful in keeping portions of the record crowd off the field of play, Boucher sent a true kick spinning high over the crossbar for the point that decided the furious struggle between the two heretofore unbeaten and untied elevens.”

“There has never been a more incredibly exciting game on Trinity field and probably never one that was played better from a technical standpoint. The almost unbelievable story book climax left the overflow crowd breathless and wilted.” Hartford Courant, October 26, 1941
