Trinity football defeats Wesleyan 32-8 at Jessee Field, becoming the first undefeated team since 1955 and the first in Coach Don Miller’s 27 years of coaching.

Dan Jessee’s 1955 team, staring QB Bobby Alexander and RB Charlie Sticka, had gone undefeated two years in a row, 1954 and 1955.

Eighteen members of 1955 team were on hand for the 1993 game between 7-0 Trinity and 6-1 Wesleyan and were introduced to the packed crowd at halftime.

Paul Cataldo, a two-way guard on that championship 1955 team, had more than alumni pride at stake. His own son, Mike, was Trinity’s starting center and one of its three captains.

“Trinity’s dominance was unwavering,” wrote sports columnist Owen Canfield.

Led by quarterback Steve Misulski’s 255 yards of passing, 215 of them in the first half, Trinity quickly marched out to a 22-0 halftime lead and never looked back.

Running back Scott Maurer caught 8 passes for 120 yards, while shifty split end, Tom McDavitt, had six catches for 55 yards, setting a career record for the Bantams.

Meanwhile the Trinity defense was “stifling and overpowering,” led by corner back tri-captain Eric Mudry, defensive end Rick Fonte, and the Hankard brothers, linebacker Ryan and defensive end Sean. They forced six Wesleyan turnovers, four interceptions and two fumbles.

Running back Shaun Kirby scored two touchdowns in the game, giving him sixteen for the year, which surpassed George Kelleher’s record from 1955. Kelleher was one of those honored alums in the stands that day and came down afterwards to shake Kirby’s hand.

”Listen, you guys are only halfway there,” he said to the young running back. “We had two unbeaten seasons in a row, 1954 and 1955."

“I’ve never been a part of history, but I was today.” Defensive End Rick Fonte
