Frank Lauterbur actually started his college career at Oberlin
College in 1943 before serving as a Marine lieutenant in World War
II. After the war, he then attended Mount Union and played
football and basketball before graduating in 1948. Later he
received a master’s degree from Kent State and went to
coaching eventually becoming the head football and athletic
director at the University of Toledo from 1963-70. His Rocket
teams had three undefeated seasons, won the MAC title in 1967 and
had 35 game win streak. In 1971, he became head football at
the University of Iowa, then in 1973 entered the professional
coaching ranks and eventually settled in Toledo as an NFL
scout.
