Mike Hohensee

Mountie gridiron great who later became a hall of fame player and coach in the Arena Football League.

Mike Hohensee is one of the greatest quarterbacks to put on a Mt. SAC jersey. He went on to make a tremendous impact at many different levels of football.

A local area all-star from Rowland High School, Hohensee arrived at Mt. SAC in 1979. During his Mt. SAC career, he was a dominant force in the conference.  The hard-working quarterback transformed an option running offense into a proficient passing team. Through focus and drive, he amassed 3,874 passing yards and set several passing, yardage and completion records. His leadership and strong character became well-defined as the Mounties’ quarterback. Hohensee earned All-American Honors as a sophomore and later transferred to the University of Minnesota on a full athletic scholarship.

After just two seasons at Minnesota in the powerful Big 10 Conference, Hohensee threw for a record 4,792 yards and 32 touchdowns. Individually, he held Gopher records in attempts, completions and touchdowns passes. Through his consistency and reliability on the field, he earned the respect of his coaches and teammates.

Hohensee played professionally in the USFL, CFL and NFL. He is best known for his playing and coaching careers in the Arena Football League (AFL). A member of the AFL Hall of Fame, this legend and pioneer is the first AFL player to throw a touchdown pass and the first player to become an AFL Head Coach. He has served eight different AFL franchises as head coach, winning 170 games, capturing six divisional championships and capturing the 2006 Arena Bowl with the Chicago Rush.
