Star NFL Running Back
Leonard James Russell, II, has accomplished many athletic feats and garnered repeated recognition for his stellar abilities—so much so that he has been called a “Master Athlete.” At an imposing 6’-2”, 240 pounds, this “gridiron force” graduated from Long Beach Poly High School in 1987 with an amazing list of honors, including Team MVP, Big 5 All CIF First Team, Gatorade National Player of the Year, and Moore League Offensive Player of the Year.
Leonard came to Mt. SAC and immediately established his stellar athletic ability. He was named Junior College All-American for two consecutive years (’88-’89). In 1990, Leonard transferred to Arizona State University, where he was celebrated as team MVP and Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year. He began his celebrated six-year NFL career in 1991 as the New England Patriots’ first-round draft pick. This distinguished him as Mt. SAC’s highest first-round pro football draft pick ever. In keeping with his superior athletic prowess, Leonard was designated the 1991 NFL Rookie of the Year and led all rookie running backs in rushing. In 1993, he ran for over 1,000 yards, was selected as a Pro Bowl alternate, and was the second-leading rusher in the American Football Conference.
After three seasons with the Patriots, Leonard went on to play for the Denver Broncos (’94), St. Louis Rams (’95), and the San Diego Chargers (’96). After retiring from the NFL, Leonard focused his determination toward making the community around him a better place. Today he is involved with such organizations as the NFL Alumni “Caring for Kids” program; Unforgettable, an organization that helps families bury their loved ones; the Optimist Club; and Say Yes to Life. Leonard is currently the director of training for Adrenaline Athletic Training in Riverside.
