Larry Smith is a former long-time Sports Information Director at Arkansas Tech and is one of the titans of the profession. Serving as SID at Tech from 1987-2005, Smith had already established a Hall of Fame career as SID at Arkansas A&M (now Arkansas-Monticello) from 1967-1978.
Over the course of his career, Smith served as the National Press Coordinator for the NAIA Track and Field National Championships from 1973-1978 and received the NAIA Award of Merit in 1976 and the Clarence “Ike” Pearson Award from the NAIA SID Association in 1986.
In 1980, Smith was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame and, in 2000, was inducted into the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Hall of Fame. In 2006, Smith was awarded the CoSIDA Lifetime Achievement Award.
In his role throughout his career, Smith successfully nominated countless student-athletes and coaches for various awards, both academically and for their achievements within athletics.
Aside from that, one of Smith’s biggest impacts from his time at Tech was his tireless and diligent work to build back the athletic history of Arkansas Tech after much of what was previously recorded was destroyed. His work in recreating those archives has been vital in maintaining the rich athletic history of Tech Athletics.
