Time was when bankers began as clerk-messengers and progressed slowly through the ranks of bookkeeper, teller and cashier before becoming the president of the bank. Even now it is unlikely that a bank clerk will move through the office of the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, become a national bank director, a director of a Federal Reserve Bank and a member of the Federal Reserve Board in one lifetime. But you did.
It is unusual for a young wartime Army officer to enter an industry and, through dynamic administration and creative leadership, move in a very few years into a top management position. But you did.
It is rare for a graduate of one liberal arts college to become the chairman of the board of trustees of another liberal arts college, chairman of the overseers of an engineering school and Dean of a large state university's College of Business Administration. But you did.
It is even more unusual for a busy banker, industrialist and educator to become a member of six famous golf clubs scattered throughout the world and play on those courses. But you do and it is reported that you do it very well.
You are a director of other industrial and finance institutions, retail, insurance and research organizations and quite properly a director of the Western Golf Association. In addition you serve your community as a trustee of St. Paul Academy, Children's Hospital of St. Paul, and as a director of the Coyle Foundation, and you are a former chairman of the Governor's Advisory Commission to the Department of Business Development.
The College is grateful for your work as chairman of the Twin Cities Area, Third Century Fund, your membership on the National Executive Committee of the Third Century Fund and as a member of the National Committee of the Dartmouth Medical School Campaign in 1960. Your service as a member of the board and chairman of the Overseers of the Thayer School has been invaluable. In addition, you were a member of the Dartmouth Alumni Council, 1975-78.
With sincere appreciation for your distinguished service it is an honor to give you the Dartmouth Alumni Award.
