Carle, King of Scotch and Mayor of Golf.
Such a sobriquetical title cannot be conferred on any other because no man of your high purpose and serious intent has the spirited hobby of collecting rare Scotch, lives in Golf, Illinois, and serves as Mayor of the Village of Golf, Florida.
Despite the title you are not one who lives on divots and stymies alone. Your interest is far deeper. For more than forty years you have been the primary force in the Evans Scholarship Foundation which provides scholarship aid for caddies, and for the last twenty years you have been chairman of the Foundation trustees. Today Evans Scholar alumni number over 2000 and there are 850 undergraduates in 27 universities. Your were President of Western Gold Association in 1957.
You left Dartmouth with a "D" in swimming and a Phi Beta Kappa Key hanging from your watch chain. You were New England Intercollegiate Fancy Diving Champion in 1924. In 1929 you were graduated from Northwestern Law School with a JD degree, at the head of your class, with the added distinction
of being the only "straight A" man and with an Order of the Coif Key to jingle against the Phi Beta Kappa Key. Your interest in the high ideals of Phi Beta Kappa is marked by your election to Phi Beta Kappa Associates in 1953. You were a Trustee of Northwestern University for thirty years and now are a life trustee.
While practicing law with the firm of Bell Boyd Lloyd Haddad & Burns and serving as counsel in Chicago you were the 1949 campaign chairman of the
Chicago Community Fund. You were elected to the Commonwealth Club of Chicago. You have been a director of many corporations and among them serve today on the Board of Weyerhaeuser Company, Acme-Cleveland Corporation, and Rand McNally & Company. You are the proprietor of the Country Club Stables in Florida and New Jersey, and a director of the American
Horse Shows Association, The United States Equestrian Team, Inc., and The Washington International Horse Show. You were the founder of the Country Club of Florida, the Ocean Club of Florida, Delray Dunes Golf and Country Club, and are active in the new development of Quail Ridge.
Your class and the college are grateful for your service as memorial fund chairman, 1951-1957, chairman, 25th Reunion Giving, member of the Development Council National Steering Committee, Major Gifts Committee, the Third Century Fund, President of Association of Dartmouth Alumni of Dartmouth College 1951-52, and member of the Alumni Council in 1951-54
With abiding appreciation and in recognition of outstanding service to Dartmouth and to education, it is our honor to present to you the Dartmouth Alumni Award.
