When Kathy Corrigan entered Weymouth High School in the early 60's there were no sports for females to participate in. The closest to sports a young woman could do in those days was to go out for the football cheerleaders, and indeed that is what Kathy did and eventually became head cheerleader. Kathy and her sisters had been actively involved in gymnastics for several years prior to high school, with her father Jim Corrigan as coach, but it was in high school that her love of gymnastics truly developed. With the blessings of then Athletic Director, Jack Fisher, she entered tumbling competitions on her own and soon became Weymouth High School's first female State High School Champion, coming in first in both tumbling and in gymnastic floor exercises in the entire state. After high school Corrigan went big time. In 1963 as a preliminary to Olympic hopes, she went to Sao Paulo, Brazil and walked away with 4 medals in Pan American games. She was at this time a student at Springfield College and to the great delight of her family and college she entered the 1964 Olympic games in Tokyo, Japan. From 1966 thru 1968 she was the Gymnastics Consultant to the President's Council on physical fitness and sports. How's that for the little girl who used to tumble in her father's barn on Main Street in South Wemouth! Alter graduation from Springfield College she went on to higher education receiving her M. Ed. at Penn State. She coached briefly at WHS in 1968-69. In 1968 she opened her own business and became one of the first Gymnastic Schools in the Country. She recently observed her 25th year in business at her present location in Rockland. Her Alma Mater honored her in 1988 as the first woman inducted into Springfield College's Athletic Hall of Fame, just as we are doing this evening. Perhaps her most prestigious honor is that of being inducted last year into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame headquartered in Anaheim, California. Kathy has been married 25 years and resides in Norwell, with her husband and 2 children.
