The first woman to be named a Distinguished Alumna of Glenbrook North High School is Leah Poulos Mueller of the Class of 1969. Leah, an Olympic speed skater, had been bringing recognition to her high school for almost twenty years. She earned the right to compete in the Olympic Games at Sapporo, Japan, in 1972, in Innsbruck, Austria, in 1976, and in Lake Placid, New York, in 1980. As a result of her competition, she earned three Olympic Silver Medals. In addition to her Olympic awards, Leah has won thirty championship medals for world competitions. She was a World Sprint Team member from 1969 to 1980. In 1974 she captured the World Sprint Championship at Innsbruck and did the same in West Germany in 1979. In addition to receiving the Glenbrook North High School Distinguished Alumna Award, Leah has been elected to the Amateur Union Hall of Fame. She is the first woman to be selected for the Hellenic Hall of Fame membership. At the same time that Leah was competing in speed skating, she was obtaining a college education. She is an honors graduate in applied behavioral sciences from the National College of Education in Evanston. Since retiring from competition, Leah has continued to be involved with speed skating by serving as a consultant and commentator for ABC Sports at the Olympic Winter Games and CBS at the World Skating Championships. Leah also wrote and narrated the Olympic television specials "The Road to Sarajevo" and "The Road to Calgary." She has served as a director and instructor for the Austrian Speed Skating Federation and the Milwaukee Public Schools. Leah remains in the public eye as a speaker and fundraiser for various church, school, social, and athletic organizations, such as the Milwaukee Children's Hospital, the Vince Lombardi Foundation for Cancer Research, and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. She also serves as a volunteer advisor to the President's Commission on Olympic Sports and conducts research for the Olympic Job Opportunity Program. Leah is married to Olympic Speed Skating Gold Medalist Peter Mueller. They are the parents of two children. Glenbrook North High School proudly presents its first Distinguished Alumna Award to three-time Olympic Silver Medalist Leah Poulos Mueller.
