Jane Anderson Terlesky
Induction
1999
Class Of
1978
Jane Anderson Terlesky, class of 1978, has always been an achiever, proving since high school that she can succeed wherever she focuses her attention. For her outstanding contributions to film and television acting, she was added to the elite group of Distinguished Alumni by the class of 1999. Jane, who performs under the stage name Jayne Brook, is probably best known for her five seasons as Dr. Diane Grad on CBS's award-winning Chicago Hope. Her character quickly became a fan favorite with her quick wit and dry humor. Yet, Jane's acting career began many years prior. She began performing at Glenbrook North, although she didn't pursue drama until after graduating. While a Spartan, Jane expressed herself as a dancer, the president of the Orchesis Dance Company, and as a singer with the Girls' Ensemble and Chamber Singers. Additionally, she showed she had a competitive drive as co-captain of the Track and Field team and Vice-President of the Student Association Executive Board. However, it wasn't until attending Duke University that Jane became interested in what would later become her career. In a fortunate turn of events, Jane auditioned for a University musical, hoping only to meet classmates. After being cast in the chorus, she was dissatisfied and enrolled in her first acting course. Ultimately, Jane graduated with honors from Duke University before studying drama for a semester at Oxford University. Soon after that, she began her professional career as an expatriate on the stages of Britain. She later would return to the United States, embarking on a successful career that has included such feature films as Kindergarten Cop, Last Dance, Gattaca, and Bye-Bye Love, television roles on "Chicago Hope" (CBS), "The District" (CBS), "Sirens" (ABC), "WIOU" (CBS), and "Sports Night" (ABC), and TV movies such as Emmy-Award winning Doing Time on Maple Drive, Trauma, and My Mother the Spy. Above all, Jane is respected as a person. Her former teachers and classmates remember her for her warmth of character, and those who have kept in touch confirm that this has not changed even with her stardom. Jane married actor-turned-director John Terlesky in 1996. The two have a daughter, Alexandra, who was born in 1998. As Jane's career develops, she demonstrates her versatility, succeeding in both film and television, in dramas and comedies, as a lead actress, and in supporting roles. For her critically acclaimed performances as an actress and the pride she has brought to her hometown community through her success, Jane was named the Distinguished Alumna for 1999.
