A public relations director, Jo Ann Shepherd Collins is also a lifelong, dedicated, and award-winning Fairborn community volunteer. The daughter of Prevo and Nell Shepherd, she graduated in 1967 from Fairborn High School, where she was a student aide and member of Future Nurses and Youth for Christ clubs. She graduated from Clark State College with a degree in public relations and marketing and was employed at numerous businesses, including Miami Valley Hospital, Handyman Ace Hardware, Mesarvey Russell & Company, JoAnn Fabrics, Elder Beerman, Alpha Signs Corporation, Zara Rhone CPA, Prather Igel Tax Service LLC, Wright Patterson Air Force Base, and Russell & Company, where she was the public relations director. She was also employed at the H&R Block Executive Division, where she was the first person to receive the “Receptionist of the Year Award"; the Fairborn City Schools, where she was a teacher's aide for disabled students and a cafeteria worker; and the Fairborn Daily Herald, where she has been a guest columnist promoting Fairborn businesses.
Collins has a lifetime of volunteer service. She was a room mother for her children’s classes; a fundraiser for the school band and ROTC; an assistant youth group leader, Sunday school treasurer, and member of the choir at the Faith Hill Church of God; and when her children took swimming lessons at the YMCA, an assistant coach of the Sea Dragons and a Miami Valley Swim Association Judge. She is a life member of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association and is the public relations officer for the Fairborn Chapter F Club, which planted flowers at Community Park and did landscaping for the Mercer Smith Museum, the oldest building in Fairborn. It is the only biker group listed in the Washington, D.C. National Book of Restoring Historic Landmarks. She has also participated in biker activities for the Greene County Health District and the toy drive for St. Jude’s Hospital and Dayton Children’s Hospital. She supported the Bikers for Blood Drive and Xenia Battered Women’s Shelter fundraisers, the Senior Health and Awareness in Huber Heights, the Fairborn Christmas project for seniors, and the Sayus Walk-a-Thon for Parkinson's Disease.
Collins organized the first motorcycle cruise-in for charity in the state of Ohio and was in charge of public relations for the 1997, 2012, 2013, and 2014 Greene County Fairground State Rallies, which were fundraisers for the Special Olympics, Xenia Food Bank, and Greene County Red Cross and attracted over 2,000 bikers. For her efforts, she is the first person to receive Chapter F’s “Individual of the Year Award.” Collins has done photography modeling, was a finalist in the Supermodel Competition for Photo Visions Unlimited, and in 1995 was a top-25 contestant in the Mrs. Ohio America Pageant. She was the Silver Lake Ice Queen for two years and has been a model for the Dayton Twigs, Fairborn Senior Citizens Charity Fashion Show, and numerous car and bike shows. She was pictured in a swimsuit with her bike in Wing World magazine, was a model and presenter for the D.A.R.E. program fundraiser at Five Rivers Metro Park Thunder at the Bowl for local police and sheriff’s departments, and worked on fundraisers for the Special Wish children and Fairborn Food Pantry.
She has been a Red Cross volunteer for thirteen years and a Mass Care Disaster Worker and ERV Driver since 2004. She has volunteered with seven hurricanes and in 2017 helped raise $20,000 for Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Collins is currently co-chair and publicity chairman of the Fairborn Military Veterans Memorial Committee and for the past two years has designed their float for the 4th of July Parade. She is also the publicity volunteer for the Fairborn Senior Center and a member of the Ohio Gun Club Association, Greene County Fish and Game Association, and a life member of the Harley Owners Group. Collins has received numerous awards for her volunteer activities, but the greatest honor she received was being selected for inclusion in the Cambridge Who's Who Registry of Executives, Professionals & Entrepreneurs. She was named an Honored Member in the 15th Edition of this Registry, the 2009-10 Edition.
Collins enjoys cooking, fishing, hunting, dancing, sewing, art, photography, and anything to do with motorcycles. She and her husband Robert reside in Fairborn and have been married for 49 years. Their son Timothy and his wife Jenna reside in Australia with their six children: Taylor, Spencer, Alisha, Braden, Olivia, and Celine. Their daughter Cynthia and her husband Darrin Beller reside in Fairborn.
