Class of 2001 — Shawnee Mission East High School

High School Career
Stacy Leeper was a standout multi-sport athlete at Shawnee Mission East (SME), graduating in 2001. In soccer, she was a member of the undefeated 1999 state championship team and repeated as state champion in 2000. She earned All-American honors in 2000 and 2001. She was named State Player of the Year three consecutive seasons: 1999, 2000, and 2001. In 2001, she also earned the Gatorade and Adidas Player of the Year awards. In 2000 she was selected Johnson County Offensive Player of the Year and Metro Player of the Year. She was Johnson County Defensive Player of the Year in 1999 and again in 2001.

In cross country, she helped lead SME to an undefeated state championship team in 1997 (and placed 2nd individually at state) and in 1998 she placed 3rd individually as the team also placed 3rd at state.

In track, she was a qualifier at the Kansas Relays and qualified for state competition, rounding out a highly versatile athletic resume.

College Career – University of Kansas Women's Soccer
Stacy Leeper earned a full-ride scholarship to the University of Kansas. During her freshman year (2001) she started 17 straight games after recovering from a preseason foot injury and scored her first collegiate goal in a 3-0 shutout vs. Baylor on October 28. As a sophomore in 2002 she appeared in 18 games (5 starts), and netted her first goal of the season in a 2-1 loss to Oklahoma on October 13. In her junior year, she started 24 of 25 matches, contributing to 11 team shutouts, and earned First-Team Academic All-Big 12. In her senior year (2004) she anchored the Jayhawk defense, was one of only five players to start every game, and recorded an assist in a 4-0 win vs. Iowa State on October 29. She again was First-Team Academic All-Big 12. She was on the Jayhawks team that clinched the Big 12 regular-season championship in 2004.

Post-Athletic Life
Following her collegiate athletic career, Stacy has been married to Andy for more than 20 years and is a mother to three sons: Hunter, Colton and Tanner. In her own words, participating in athletics at SME was one of the most enjoyable stages in her life. She credits high-school sports for helping her learn balance, discipline and to become a well-rounded person. A memorable incident early in her career involving a coach’s remark about her economic background (“you’re from the other side of Mission”) helped shape her outlook: it instilled in her a strong sense of compassion and equality. She has carried that into youth sports coaching, always striving to treat every child the same regardless of background.

Her experiences at SME enabled her to earn a full-ride scholarship to Kansas, complete her Bachelor’s degree in four years while maintaining academic excellence (Jayhawk Scholar-Athlete honors), and serve as team captain during the Big 12 championship season. Athletics at SME and Kansas remain foundational to who she is today.
