John Cook became the head football coach at Charlotte Country Day in 1959. Known as a fierce competitor and gentleman who always spoke the truth, John easily earned the respect of his players and coaches. The football program secured six NCISAA state titles under Cook. His overall record after 26 years at Country Day was 197 wins and 60 losses, winning state titles in 1974, 1975, and 1981 through 1984.
Cook was born in Lanham, Mayland. He attended Drexel (Pa.) and the University of Maryland, where he made the football team as an offensive lineman as a walk-on. He taught and coached in Minnesota and Virginia before coming to Charlotte, arriving at Country Day from St. Christopher’s School in Richmond.
In 1986, Charlotte Country Day and Charlotte Catholic High School competed in the John R. Cook Cup to honor John Cook - a coach and friend who fostered and promoted the Country Day vs. Charlotte Catholic tradition. The John R. Cook Cup was created to inspire strength of character and leadership, much like John did himself.
Throughout his 26 years, Coach Cook served as the head of the math department, athletic director, football coach, wrestling coach, and baseball coach. Throughout his tenure as head football coach, there was one strength the Buccaneers always held to, a program rich in tradition and legacy. Today, our boys’ football program plays atop John Cook Field in Belk Stadium in his honor.
