For Kay and Ray Shaw, family has always come first—and for decades, Charlotte Country Day School has been an extension of that family. Their enduring commitment to Country Day is rooted in a shared belief in the strength of community, the importance of teamwork, and the lifelong value of giving back.

Kay and Ray’s generosity, warmth, and quiet leadership have become woven into the very fabric of the Athletics program. Whether serving in key leadership roles, cheering enthusiastically from the sidelines, or offering steadfast support behind the scenes, they exemplified what it means to lead with both heart and humility.

Described by friends and colleagues as dedicated, caring, supportive, unobtrusive, understated, gracious, and giving, the Shaws embody the very values that coaches and teachers strive to instill in every student-athlete.

Their home—and their hearts—have long been open to the Country Day community. They hosted countless gatherings that brought families, faculty, and students together. Ray served six years on the Board of Trustees, and together he and Kay generously contributed their time and talents to the Parents’ Association and the Boosters Club. Ray was inducted into the Honorary Alumni Association in 1997, followed by Kay and the entire Shaw family in 2004.

Kay and Ray were also major supporters of the Believe & Achieve Campaign, which helped make the indoor track in the Bruton Smith Athletic Center a reality. Their philanthropy extended to the Athletic Field House, the Athletic Pavilion, and Touma Stadium at Dowd Field—each project reflecting their deep belief in the opportunities athletics create for young people.

Kay and Ray will forever be remembered as strong leaders, tireless workers, team builders, and generous supporters. Above all, they will be cherished as role models—for their children and their spouses (Whit and Laura Shaw, Kirk and Tammy Shaw, and Beth and Jim Penegar); their adopted son, the late Jason Walls ’92; their grandchildren (Raegan Cassady ’03, Geoff Shaw ’00, Jono Shaw ’04, Kammie Shaw ’05, Andrew Shaw ’06, Madison Penegar ’14, and Connor Penegar ’16); and their numerous great-grandchildren.

Today, Country Day continues to be enriched by four generations of Shaw family Buccaneers whose generous spirits touch every corner of campus. Kay and Ray Shaw have built a legacy grounded in faith, generosity, humility, and an unwavering belief in the power of education and athletics.
