J. Nolan Mills III '79

Nolan Mills III ’79 left an indelible mark on Country Day Athletics through his leadership, exceptional talent, and championship success, most notably on the golf course. A standout on both the Varsity Football and Varsity Golf teams, Nolan’s competitive drive helped elevate Buccaneer Athletics to new levels. As a leader on the golf team, he captured three NCISAA Individual State Championships, guided the Buccaneers to NCISAA District IV and State titles in 1978, and earned Most Valuable Player honors. He also finished as runner-up in the 1978 North Carolina Junior Boys Championship. Nolan’s consistency, sportsmanship, and dedication set a standard for future Buccaneer golfers.

Nolan’s achievements continued at North Carolina State University, where he became one of the most decorated golfers in Wolfpack history. He earned First Team NCAA All-American honors in 1983, captured the ACC Individual Championship by a record nine-shot margin—the largest in ACC history—and was named to the All-ACC First Team in two of his four years. That same year, he won the North Carolina Amateur Championship and became one of only two NC State golfers ever to claim three collegiate tournaments in a single season. His collegiate career also includes the 1981 Carolinas Golf Association Championship and recognition as one of the Top 50 All-Time ACC Golfers.

Nolan’s competitive spirit endured long after college, highlighted by victories in the 2009 Charlotte City Amateur and the 2017 Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Championship. These accomplishments reflect a lifetime defined by excellence, precision, and a deep love for the game. Through his achievements, Nolan embodies the finest qualities of Country Day athletics: talent shaped by discipline, teamwork rooted in respect, and a pursuit of excellence that continues well beyond graduation.
