Few coaches have shaped Country Day Athletics—or North Carolina high school sports—more profoundly than Coach Suzie Pignetti. A dedicated teacher, pioneering administrator, and championship-winning coach, her 20 years at Country Day helped establish a lasting tradition of excellence in girls’ athletics. As one of only three women athletic directors in Mecklenburg County during her tenure as Girls’ Athletic Director (1974–1980), she played a pivotal role in expanding opportunities for female student-athletes and building programs that would thrive for generations.

As Head Varsity Volleyball Coach (1977–1994) and Head Varsity Softball Coach (1985–1997), Coach Pignetti built championship programs that combined competitive success with character development. Her teams captured six volleyball and five softball NCISAA State Championships, along with numerous conference titles, and competed internationally in Belgium and Japan. Over a 35-year career, she amassed more than 745 wins, 15 state titles, and earned national recognition as the 2012 American Volleyball Coaches Association National High School Coach of the Year. A tireless advocate for student-athletes and community service, she also founded the Serve for the Cure Volleyball Tournament, raising more than $550,000 for breast cancer research. Her trailblazing legacy continues to inspire excellence on and off the court.
