When Coach Bob Witman arrived at Country Day in 1990, he didn’t just take over the football program—he redefined it. Grounded in hard work, preparation, and execution, his leadership reshaped the culture and returned Country Day Football to prominence as one of North Carolina’s most respected programs.

Over 25 seasons as Head Football Coach (1990–2014), Coach Witman compiled a remarkable 219–67 record, led the Buccaneers to 13 state championship appearances, and captured seven NCISAA State Titles. His teams were defined by discipline, toughness, and integrity—values that extended far beyond the field. A two-time Conference Coach of the Year, recipient of the Carl Bolick Coach’s Award, and member of the Honorary Alumni Association, Coach Witman’s influence reached across multiple sports as well. For more than three decades, he coached shot put and discus, producing 28 individual state champions, and pioneered strength training at Country Day by building the school’s first weight facility. Through championships and character alike, Coach Witman built a legacy that continues to define Buccaneer Athletics.
