Coach
For nearly five decades, Coach Bob “Buzzy” Plyler has embodied excellence, commitment, and quiet leadership at Country Day. Since 1976, he has been a steady and beloved presence—often described as a “triple threat” as a gifted teacher, nurturing advisor, and exceptional coach. As the school’s longest-tenured faculty member, Buzzy shaped generations of students through his work in the Upper School History department, where he helped develop American Studies, AP U.S. History, and Government, always emphasizing critical thinking, respectful dialogue, and personal growth. Known for his calm demeanor, dry wit, and open-door approach, he prepared students not only for academics, but for life.
His influence extended across athletics with the same thoughtfulness and care. Coach Plyler led programs in football, basketball, baseball, and golf, most notably building a legendary golf program that produced 10 state championships, 21 conference titles, more than 1,000 victories, and numerous collegiate and professional athletes. Even after retiring from the classroom in 2022, he continues to serve as a substitute teacher and Varsity Boys’ Golf coach. His many honors—including multiple Carl Bolick Coach’s Awards, the Alumni Distinguished Faculty Award, and induction into the Honorary Alumni Association—reflect a legacy defined not by accolades alone, but by trust, humility, and the countless lives he has touched.
