Introduction for Steve Morgan at the Hall of Fame ceremony on March 15, 2025
Our next inductee is Steve Morgan, graduate of the class of 1969 and member of the 1968 state championship football team.
Steve was a multisport athlete at St. Pius and was voted Football MVP, Basketball MVP and Track MVP – all in his senior year!
When asked to share a memory of the 1968 state championship game, Steve shared:
“We had a very good team. And the competition was tough! We lost our first game that year to Sandy Springs as they came from behind to win. Coach George Maloof went to the newspapers saying “we’ll be back”.
From there we won the rest of our games. As players were all close and had a great time having fun and laughing to keep the pressure down. Our State Championship game was played against the Gainesville Red Elephants in Gainesville. It was a very cold rainy night…in the high 30 degrees. And the worst of it was the Gainesville visitor locker rooms had 6 inches of water on the floor…what a miserable experience getting dressed and trying to stay warm. We think the “flood” was intentional and we took it out on them on the field. We won 6 to 0 in a hard fought game but our defense held Gainesville to no yards rushing and no first downs…certainly a first for a state championship in Georgia and a record that will probably never be broken.”
Another milestone for the Class of 1969 is that they beat Marist all 4 years! Steve scored 4 touchdowns against Marist in his senior year!!! Steve wanted us to be clear that this would not have happened without our great offensive line and blocking backs like full back Mike Mulvihill and running back Joe Pelt.
Steve was named the All State, All County, Georgia AA Back of the Year 1968, National Football Foundation High School Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete, and Atlanta Journal and Constitution Back of the Week.
After St. Pius, he received a football scholarship to Georgia Tech where he played receiver and safety.
Many will remember Steve’s mother - Jene Morgan, who was the receptionist at St. Pius for 31 years, from 1969-1990. Jene lives next door to Steve and will turn 100 in November.
Post Georgia Teach Steve’s career included time at Mattel Toys, Coca Cola, and owning a restaurant in Tampa. For the past 43 years he has been a Commercial Real Estate Manager. He was a regular participant in Food for the Poor activities, including cooking for the poor on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
In Steve’s own words: “I met the best friends of my life at St. Pius. There are 10 or so of us that still get together at least a couple times a year and we don’t miss a beat in continuing on from where we last left off. We laugh and tell stories and reminiscence like crazy.
We are excited to add Athletic Hall of Fame to Steve’s memories of St. Pius.
