Introduction for Frank Maloof, Jr. at the Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony on March 15, 2025
Our next inductee is Frank Maloof, a graduate of the class of 1982. Frank tragically died in a car accident in 1984 when he was just 20 years old.
Frankie was the son of Frank and Dolores Maloof and one of their six children to attend St. Pius. Joining us here today are his sisters; Judy, Rita, Pam, his brother Steve, and his nephew Luke. All St. Pius alumni.
Frankie was a gifted multi-sport athlete, excelling at both football and baseball. As a running back for the Golden Lions, he rushed for over 1,000 yards in both his junior and senior seasons.
His honors include:
Coca Cola Golden Helmet Award
Atlanta Journal-Constitution All-State Team Honorable Mention
DeKalb County Touchdown Club All County Running Back
DeKalb County All Stars
St. Pius X Most Valuable Offensive Player
Frankie’s St. Pius baseball career was just as spectacular. He had an outstanding junior season, ending with a .475 batting average, as the starting second baseman for the Golden Lions. He was named the Most Valuable Player for the St. Pius baseball team in 1981.
While at St. Pius, Frankie participated in student government his junior and senior years, receiving an award for Outstanding Representation of the Class of 1982. He also took part in Pastoral Ministry as a Eucharistic Minister.
Frank accomplished his goal to play Division 1 football when he accepted a position to play at Georgia Tech. He began there in the fall of 1983 (CHECK DATE), and as a freshman he played on both the kickoff and return teams.
After Frankie’s death, the St. Pius community rallied to establish the Frank M Maloof, Jr. Memorial Fund raising over $200,000. Contributions to the fund went toward building Maloof Plaza – located inside the front gates of the school, spanning the area from the chapel to the Young Center. St. Pius students have enjoyed this area daily for the past 40 years including the children of his siblings.
Father Terry Young may have said it best - those “who knew him also had reason to praise God and thank Him for the life and character of this splendid young man whose faith, caring, and enthusiasm for life had touched so many in such a positive way”
Accepting the Hall of Fame honor on his behalf will be his nephew, Luke Winstel.
