Jemel Spearman

Jemel Spearman Class of 1999

At St. Pius Jemel was a two-sport varsity athlete competing in both baseball and basketball. However, he quickly distinguished himself as a force on the baseball diamond. His standout achievements earned him Golden Lion Top Hitter honors in ’98. His senior year he was named to the All-Region 1st team, the Georgia Dugout .400 Club, named Golden Lion MVP and played in the Georgia High School All-Star game. He was also a member of Team GA Sunbelt Team.

His impressive high school career laid the foundation for success at Georgia Southern University, where he excelled as a shortstop. He earned All-Southern Conference honors in both his junior and senior seasons.

In 2002, Jemel was drafted by the Chicago Cubs. He played 6 years in the Cubs organization and 2 years with the Washington Nationals, reaching the AAA level.  He made the minor league All-Star team multiple times.

After playing professionally, Jemel became a scout for the Athletics Major League Baseball Club. Currently he is the same role for the A’s.

Jemel has been an NCAA D1 Men’s Basketball Referee since 2014. The past three years he has officiated in the March Madness tournament as well the ACC tournament.

The St. Pius Baseball program has an award named after him because of how well he continues to represent the mission of St. Pius X not only on the field, but off the field as well. The Jemel Spearman Award acknowledges the Golden Lion Baseball player who embodies what it meant to be a Golden Lion - in particular, through their work ethic, and representation of the team.

Our current head baseball Coach - Kevin Ksionzyk shared that Jemel was always an exceptional worker, and would go to incredible efforts to ensure he got his training in.  Beyond his talent, he worked incredibly hard, and still does, and that's what creates separation at the next level. He's the model representative for the St. Pius baseball community.

We are very proud to induct Jemel into the St. Pius Hall of Fame.
