Our next inductee into the Athletic Hall of Fame is the all-time winningest football coach in St. Pius history, Paul Standard, Class of 1980.

Coach Paul Standard’s relationship with St. Pius X began in 1976, when he first set foot on campus as a student. During his time as a Golden Lion, he was a three-year letterman on the football team, excelling as both an offensive lineman and a defensive end under the guidance of legendary Coach George B. Maloof.

The Standard name has become a familiar one around St. Pius as Paul sent his 4 children to St. Pius – PG, Liz, MaryKate & Maggie.

Coach Standard is a proud 1984 graduate of The Citadel. He then joined the United States Army Reserve, where he served honorably from 1984 to 1992. The discipline, leadership, and commitment to excellence instilled during his time at The Citadel have remained hallmarks of his coaching philosophy throughout his 40-year career.

Coach Standard’s time at head coach of the St. Pius football team is nothing short of remarkable. His 174 wins are the most in school history surpassing his mentor and dear friend George Maloof. 

Many of his games were memorable, such as the 2003 game against Marist, beating them for the first time in 21 years and repeating that success several other times. 

In 2012 & 2014 his teams returned to the state Championship games for the first time since 1968. He led St. Pius to the playoffs 18 times and competed in 8 regional championships. His teams were ranked in the top 10 in the state an impressive 11 times. 

Coach Standard’s legacy is about more than just numbers—it marked a time of tremendous success and growth for the St. Pius football program. Under his leadership, Pius became known across Georgia for its discipline, toughness, and heart. He didn’t just win games—he built one of the most respected high school football programs in the state, but also strengthened the community around it.

He will be remembered as a coach who emphasized relationships over wins and losses.
