Robert Hyland '63 was born in White Plains and came to Archbishop Stepinac after graduating from St. Bernard's School.

Bob first displayed his leadership skills at Stepinac by serving as a class officer for three years and School President in his Senior year. Perhaps overshadowing his devotion to the school through service were his outstanding sports achievements.

He played four sports: track, football, baseball and basketball. His specialty in track and field was shot put, which he threw over fifty four feet. His greatest success was in football, when he was named All-CHSFL for two years, Al County for two years, and All-East in his Senior year.

After graduation Bob spent four years at Boston College as an accounting major. Football, according to his coaches, was Bob's first love and he continued to excel. Bob was named All-East for two years, received All-American honorable mention in his Junior year, and All-American in Senior year. In 1966, B.C. Coach Jim Miller prophetically called Bob "...an All American lineman, if I ever saw one."

Upon graduation Bob was a first round draft choice for the Green Bay Packers - the first offensive lineman chose in the country - the ninth player chosen overall in the draft. Under legendary Coach Vince Lombardi, he was only the second rookie to start and was selected in 1967-68 for the All Rookie Team.

Bob's professional football career spanned eleven years and included being a center on the champion Packers in Super Bowl II and on the Packer roster for four years, the Giants for five, the Bears for one, and the Patriots for one. Bob retired in 1978 while the property of the Oakland Raiders. During his tenure as a professional player he was nominated twice for NFL Man of the Year.

After the 1975 season he married Liz O'Brien. Today they have three sons: Michael, Dennis and Kevin and live inWhite Plains.

Bob has been an active member of the community, and has been honored with induction to the Westchester County Hall of Fame and the CHSAA Hall of Fame.

Today he is the President/Owner of the Sports Page Pub in White Plains and a Special Agent for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance.

What has led Bob to his induction to the Archbishop Stepinac Hall of Fame is his overwhelming spirit of generosity and dedication to our school. He is currently President of the Alumni Association, a service he performs "above and beyond the call of duty." In addition, he and his wife have entrusted the education of their two eldest sons to our caring and gifted teachers.

To paraphrase Coach Jim Miller, Bob Hyland is "a most deserving choice for the Stepinac Hall of Fame, if we ever saw one."
