James Smith graduated from Jamestown College in 1932. He then went on to have a successful career as Vice-President in the Division of EDP Engineering of Minneapolis Honeywell. He directed the research, development, and engineering capabilities of Honeywell’s first two generations of computer equipment.

James was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree from Jamestown College.

James “Cap” Smith was born July 9, 1908, and received his B.A. from Jamestown College in 1932.  He received his M.M.E. from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn and did additional graduate work at the California Institute of Technology.

Mr. Smith’s list of honors started with a Rhodes Scholarship and Graduate Scholarships at the University of Chicago and the California Institute of Technology.  In addition to these academic awards, he was elected to the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute’s “100 Club,” and is listed in Who’s Who in Engineering, Who’s Who in Commerce and Industry, and Who’s Who in America.

Mr. Smith was also a Fellow of the Institute of Radio Engineers, a member of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and the Armed Forces Communications Association, a civilian member of the Society of Naval Engineers, and Past President of the Communications Panel Research and Development Board.

Mr. Smith held many distinguished positions throughout his career.  He served as Head of Research and as Division Head of RCA Laboratories; Manager of Microwave Communications at Raytheon Manufacturing Company; Assistant Vice President and Director of Engineering at Data-matic Division of Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator Company; and Vice President of Division of E.D.P. Engineering at Minneapolis-Honeywell in Wellesley Hills, MA.

He married Edna Bjorum (’31) and they had one daughter, Marilyn.  He passed away on December 23, 1967.
