From the 1995 Hea Kan:
The 1984 Jimmie Football Team finished 8-1 and with a 5-1 conference record, were co-champions of the North Dakota Collegiate Athletic Conference (NDCAC). The championship was the eighth and final one for head coach Rollie Greeno.
Jamestown opened its 20th season under Greeno as the 20th ranked team in the country and defeated Rocky Mountain (Montana) 27-19. A 34-28 loss to Minot State the following week was the only blemish on the Jimmies’ record as the team went on to win its final seven games of the season. Jamestown outscored their opponents 156-51 over that span. As the Jimmies winning streak continued, so did their ascent up the NAIA national rankings. Following a 27-14 victory over Carroll (Montana), Jamestown headed into the final NAIA ranking as the ninth-ranked team. With four of the eight teams ahead of the Jimmies losing that week, chances were Jamestown would move into the top eight and earn a quarter-final playoff spot. However, Finday (Ohio) jumped from 11th to 7th and Southwest Kansas went from 10th to 8th, leaving the Jimmies on the outside looking in.
Despite missing out on the playoffs, the Jimmies had several players earn postseason honors. Junior guard Andy Menninger was named NAIA All-American first-team, marking the 10th straight season a Jimmie earned national honors. Senior tight end Bruce Fleming and Menninger were named to the all-NAIA District 12 team. Senior lineman Bruce Wentz, senior quarterback David Schoonhoven, senior defensive back Scott Foss, junior running back Brian Engel, and junior defensive lineman Stewart Brown joined Flemming and Menninger on the All-NDCAC team. Earning honorable mention All-NDCAC honors were senior defensive back Mike Kautzman, senior offensive guard Bill Jansen, senior defensive end Lance Carlton, and senior defensive back Mike Hauger. Schoonhoven was selected as the Most Valuable Graduating Senior.
Statistically, Schoonhoven led the team with 883 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. He completed 20 of 45 passes for 467 yards and four touchdowns. Fleming caught 11 passes for 256 yards and four scores. Foss had five interceptions to lead the defense, which received strong contributions from juniors Lee Ziegler and Robert Lubarski.
Seniors on the 1984 team included QB David Schoonhoven, RB Doug Best, QB Jim Neubauer, RB Chris Brown, LB Matt Pederson, RB Gary Martin, S Scott Foss, CB Mike Kautzman, C Steve Mense, G Bill Jansen, T Gene Crabtree, T Bruce Wentz, T Russel Miller, DE Lance Carlton, TE Bruce Fleming, DE Tom Boerger, DE Mike Hauger, and LB Marv Kanwisher.
