BELLINGHAM – Under the lights of Civic Stadium, the Sedro-Woolley Cubs didn’t just compete; they made a statement.
In a rare and dominant showing at the WWU High School Invitational, the Cubs captured team titles on both the boys' and girls' sides, marking the first time in recent memory the program has "doubled up" at a major multi-team event. Competing against a stacked field of 14 teams from across Northwest Washington, the Cubs proved they are the team to beat as the postseason approaches.
The girls’ squad finished with a commanding 149 points, while the boys mirrored that success with 151 points, fending off stiff competition from traditional county and district powerhouses.
A Bridge to the Next Level
What sets the WWU Invitational apart is its unique format, allowing elite high school athletes to share the track with collegiate competitors. This "bridge" between levels provided the Cubs with more than just medals—it provided perspective.
"The experience the WWU Invite affords our athletes is invaluable," the coaching staff noted following the win. "Seeing that next level of competition up close pushes them to find another gear. To win both sides of a meet this size is an added bonus."

Lyla Self was a force on the oval, securing a double-victory in the 100m and 400m sprints. Her range across the short and long sprints provided the Cubs with a massive points haul.

Ethan DeJong proved untouchable over the barriers, sweeping both the 110m hurdles and the 300m hurdles.
