Congratulations to Sedro-Woolley's own Ruby Hudson on being named the Skagit Valley Herald Girls Tennis Player of the Year.
Ruby's journey is especially impressive because she did not begin playing competitive tennis until just two weeks before her freshman tryouts. Four years later, she concluded her Cubs career as the team's No. 1 singles player, a Class 3A State Tournament alternate, Sub-District runner-up, and fifth-place finisher at the Northwest District Tournament.
Ruby recorded regular-season victories over the top singles players from Mount Vernon, Ferndale, Oak Harbor, Burlington-Edison, Anacortes, and Blaine. Her success reflects countless hours of dedication, offseason training, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Head Coach Janine Van Liew praised Ruby's work ethic, leadership, and positive influence on her teammates, calling her a student-athlete who exemplified responsibility, drive, and character. In addition to her accomplishments on the court, Ruby maintained a 3.85 GPA and will attend Grand Canyon University this fall to study hospitality and tourism.
